Theme: Red and white wines from the Loire
Sauvignon Blanc has evolved into a strong contestant for the title of “most popular style of dry white” driven largely by the grassy and aromatic wines of New Zealand.
The inspiration for the New World wines came from such wines as Sancerre and Pouilly Fumé from the Loire. The best examples have a unique minerality and balance with less obvious fruit and Sauvignon character and have only improved in the last 10 years or so.
The Loire can also produce some delicious reds, often designed for early drinking as well as a few wines that benefit from longer ageing.
For this tasting we have lined up some favourite examples of Loire Sauvignon at its best, a delicious Loire white made from Chenin and a couple of reds, one of which has benefited from 15 years of bottle age.
