Interview with Roshan Liyanage, Assistant Manager

We have a fantastic team here at Hart’s Hotel & Kitchen and we thought you might be interested in learning a bit more about them.

Each member of the team strives to be the very best at what they do, from making sure your room is spotless for your stay to encouraging you to book with us in the first place and everything in between. You will find a series of blogs where you will get to go behind the scenes with a different staff member and learn a little bit more about them and their role at Hart’s. Here is our interview with Assistant Manager, Roshan Liyanage.

What’s your background in hospitality and how long have you been in the hotel trade?

I joined the hospitality industry in 2006 as a waiter at the five-star Burj Al Arab Jumeirah, Dubai. I have always been passionate about excellent customer service so gradually worked my way up the ladder to the position of Restaurant Manager. After 7 years I decided to join Emirates Airlines as a first-class senior lounge supervisor. With over 13 years of experience in the industry, food and beverage is where my heart is!

What led you to this position at Hart’s Nottingham?

I joined Hart’s three years ago now. I wanted to broaden my hospitality experience and the role at Hart’s has enabled me to work across many aspects of a hotel’s functions, including housekeeping, human resources, health & safety, food & drink, financials and so on.

What do you find most rewarding about your role?

The opportunity to meet and look after our valued guests and of course the celebrities who stay with us.

In your opinion what makes a great hotel?

The staff and great customer service make a hotel great and at Hart’s we go that extra mile to provide the customer a memorable experience.

What is your proudest moment of your career to date?

When I was granted a free four-year scholarship from Jumeirah Group for a Hotel Management degree. To be awarded this and then successfully complete was a very proud moment for myself and my family.

Who would you love to see staying at the hotel next?

I am a movie geek, so I would really like to see my idol Steven Spielberg stay with us.

What is your favourite dish at Hart’s and why?

Hart’s home-made pasta is not only the best pasta in a rich creamy sauce it is served with my favourite vegetables, asparagus and mushrooms!

Do you have a favourite room in the hotel and why?

My favourite room is the garden room. You can open the French doors on to the private garden. It’s the best place to relax and unwind with a G&T on a lovely day. The views from the garden are amazing too, it’s a unique spot in Nottingham and our hidden gem.

What do you like most about working for Harts Hambleton Group?

I enjoy the supportive work environment and the family atmosphere that Hart’s creates, it is so different from my previous roles. We are given opportunities to grow and build a career in the hospitality industry, its fantastic to watch inexperienced staff blossom and grow into confident individuals.

How do you relax in your spare time?

I love cinema and theatre. Nottingham offers a fantastic programme of concerts and theatre and I am lucky enough to work just up the road from both the Theatre Royal and Concert Hall and the Nottingham Playhouse. My favourite musical is the The Book of Mormon, this is a magnificent production which I would certainly watch again.

Describe a perfect day in Nottingham, that you would recommend to hotel guests?

I would recommend a visit to the National Justice Museum and Nottingham Caves, followed by a drink in England’s oldest inn ‘The Old Trip to Jerusalem’, which is nestled beneath the cliff where Nottingham’s historic castle stands.
