Here is a one-off. Inexpensive Italian Pinot Noir. Clean red fruit character makes this young Pinot a big hit. For lovers of young Burgundy or NZ Pinot on a budget.

2004 Chinon Rouge, Domaine de Beauséjour – £24.00
This one has red and black cherry aromas and will delight anyone looking for lightness as well as character.

2007 Beaujolais Villages, Jean Charles Pivot – £26.00
Gentle fruit flavours with good balance.

2008 Triennes Rosé, Provence – £26.00
This pale Rosé is made by two famous Burgundian wine makers in a southern outpart in the Var, the wine is light, elegant, aromatic and refreshing.

A very fine Cru Beaujolais from Jean Paul Brun with strawberry aromas.

A Pinot that we enjoy drinking and can list at this price is a very rare animal indeed.

2006 Tom’s Block Pinot Noir, Neudorf, New Zealand – £41.00
Glorious Pinot fruit from a top grower in Nelson.

2007 Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, “Frentano” – £19.50
The Montepulciano grape is rounder and fuller than Sangiovese and in this wine delivers flavours of plums and damsons with leathery notes and a bitter chocolate finish. What a steal!

2008 “Cuvée des Galets” – £19.50
An unfiltered organic wine from the Gard in Southern France made from Grenache, Syrah and Carignan grapes. The wine is juicy and round with a lovely savoury finish.

2007 Côtes du Rhône “Visin Domm La Fourmente – £25.00
Blend of organic, old vines Grenache and Syrah gives exuberant peppery fruit and rich, freshly Chateauneuf style in this exceptional vintage.

2005 Faugères, Leon Barral – £29.00
Magnificent Biodynamic wine with a spicy nose and savoury mature palate.

2005  La Tuileire du Puy, Bordeaux Supérioeur – £26.00
A minor Bordeaux in a lovely vintage offering civilised, generous fruit.

Expressive nose with leather, chocolate and violet notes. Lots of bright fruit flavours in a rounded delicious wine.

2006 The Ruins Organic Syrah, Robertson, S.Africa – £20.00
Round, rich and ready.

2008 Alamos Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon – £25.00
From Nicolas Catena’s Mendoza vineyards this ripe wine combines some red fruit and spicey notes with plum and cedarwood characteristics.

2007 M de Gras Merlot Reserva – £26.00
Very generous and concentrated chocolatey Merlot fruit.

2005 Qupè Central Coast Syrah – £41.00
This old favourite from California delivers magnificent rich but sophisticated Syrah fruit.

More mature reds from the Old World

2004 Vina Urbina Crianza, Rioja – £30.00
Urbina’s wines have a soft and round almost Burgundian quality with lots of aromatic interest. Just starting to mature.

2000 Barbera d’Asti “Vigna del Noce” Trinchero – £38.50
One of Italy’s very best Barbera’s made from organic grapes and old vines planted in 1929. Although the wine has a crunchy refreshing bitter cherry character that one might expect from this variety, it has a great deal more polish and rounded tannins.

1999 Nuits St Georges “Vieilles Vignes” Chevillon – £65.00
Luscious and mature red Burgundy.

1997 La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva “904” – £63.00
This well known wine is on top form in this vintage. It combines plenty of vanilla flavours from the oak with glorious maturing tempranillo fruit.

2001 Gruaud Larose St Julien 2ème cru classé - £75.00
A typically forward velvety textured wine with loads of fruit (Parker 90 points).

1971 Ch. Beychevelle St Julien 2ème cru – £95.00
Almost 40 years on, this wine is full of life and has reached a gentle elegant maturity with spicey dried fruit aromas, and flavours of cedarwood & leathers.

1997 Musigny, Vieilles Vignes, Grand Cru Domaine de Vogue – £220.00
Our proprietor says this is too expensive for him to taste but the vineyard is tops, the vintage is attractive and fast maturing and Parker awards the wine 93 to 95 points. According to another taster it has a “breathtaking nose of blueberries, licorice, jammy blackberries, violets, Asian spices and stones!” – enough said!
